American Red Cross SICKLE CELL FIGHTER HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Did you know? In the U.S., it is estimated that over 100,000 people have sickle cell disease— most are of African descent and will require regular blood transfusions to help manage their disease. Many individuals who are Black have unique protein structures on their red blood cells that make their donations the most compatible blood, with reduced risk of complications, to help patients with sickle cell disease. Empowering youth to help patients with sickle cell disease. The American Red Cross Sickle Cell Fighter High School Scholarship program is
a student scholarship program that will reward schools that successfully collect blood from donors who are Black, supporting the goal of helping sickle cell patients by diversifying the blood supply, while also promoting access to, and diversity in higher education. The top ten high schools in the country that host at least one blood drive and collect the most units from donors who self-identify as African American (minimum of 50) this school year, will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship. How to get involved Schedule Red Cross blood drives between July 1—June 30. If your school is
one of the top ten high schools in the country with the most total productive units
from Red Cross self-identified African American donors, the Red Cross will provide a $5,000 monetary award to be used for an educational scholarship at an establishment of higher education for a select recipient. Representatives from your school will determine the scholarship recipient based on Red Cross recommended criteria. The scholarship will be awarded in the recipient’s name to the institution of higher education that the student will attend. Scholarship recipients will be encouraged
to continue to support the Red Cross by hosting blood drives while in college. The scholarship distribution process must be completed by the sponsoring high school. American Red Cross Why Is Blood Donor Diversity Important? The most compatible blood match for patients receiving blood transfusions often comes from donors of the same race or similar ethnicity. The more frequently someone receives blood transfusions, the more important a close blood type match becomes. A patient's immune system will form antibodies against donated blood that does not closely match their own blood type. To help avoid transfusion-related complications, a patient is more likely to find the most compatible blood match from a donor of the same race or similar ethnicity. Now more than ever, the American Red Cross needs the help of blood donors who are Black. In the United States, it is estimated that over 100,000 people have sickle cell disease, and the disease affects 1 out of every 365 Black or African American births. A single patient with sickle cell disease can require multiple blood transfusions each year to treat complications from sickle cell disease. Some may need as many as 100 units per year. Blood donors who are Black play a critical role in helping people with sickle cell disease, which primarily affects individuals who are Black or African American. Patients with this disease may rely on regular blood transfusions throughout their lives. It is essential that the blood they receive be the most compatible match possible, from someone of the same race or similar ethnicity. While 13% of the U.S. population is Black, less than 3% of Red Cross blood donors self-identify as African American. Right now, there aren't enough blood donors to meet the urgent need for blood for patients with sickle cell disease. Act Today! You may be familiar with the A, B, O and AB blood types. That's only the beginning. There are over 600 known antigens, proteins on your red blood cells, that determine blood type. C-, E-, K- blood is the most requested blood type for a patient with sickle cell disease. You don't need to know your blood type to give blood. Last night, Dr. Cave recognized those who go above and beyond. She thanked the Food and Nutrition Staff for their dedicated efforts in ensuring our Thanksgiving Dinners were a success! She also acknowledged Mrs. Tinsley who had high passing rates for her SC Ready Math and ELA. Also, Mr. Prasad had an impressive passing rate for the SC Alt in Reading and Math.

Mrs. Lottie Lewis gave a special presentation at our board meeting. She gifted Allendale-Fairfax Elementary School a cash check sponsored by Emma's House . She also gifted gingerbread houses donated by SRP to the entire second grade! We are so thankful for all the work she has done and continues to do for our schools.
