Allendale County School District wants to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on 9/11. We honored the brave souls who served at ground zero and the tragic lives lost in the attacks with a memorial ceremony. Superintendent Dr. Cave, Chief Wiggins, and Cadet Lokeya Robinson all gave speeches and laid wreaths in tribute to 9/11. Chief Wiggins stated 9/11 is not just a day in history. There were real consequences and some people still continue to suffer from health issues caused by working at ground zero. As it is the 22nd anniversary of 9/11, it is important that we "never forget!"

STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ELLEN E. WEAVER STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATION “I Have a Dream” 60th Anniversary Student Writing Contest Announcement On the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington, the South Carolina Department of Education is pleased to announce a student writing contest highlighting the monumental importance of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech and encouraging students to put their own dreams for the future into words. Prompt: On August 28th, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, one of the most influential speeches of the 20th century. In this speech he appeals to the “promissory note” of America’s Founding ideals, first outlined in the “magnificent words of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence,” that all people “would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” As he stands in the “symbolic shadow” of President Lincoln, he traces that promise forward through the Emancipation Proclamation, which he calls the “great beacon light of hope” for enslaved African Americans. He goes on to say, “So even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that once day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self- evident, that all men are created equal.” You have been invited to stand at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC, in his “symbolic shadow,” and give your own speech highlighting your American dream for our shared future. South Carolina Department of Education Announces Meet and Greet with Superintendent Finalist Allendale, S.C. - The South Carolina Department of Education has announced Dr. Vallerie Coath Cave as the finalist candidate for the Allendale County Schools superintendent position. Parents, students, and community members are invited to meet Cave at a community-wide reception at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 31 in the Allendale-Fairfax High School cafeteria. “During her interview, Vallerie emphasized her belief in the potential of every single student in Allendale and presented a concrete and systematic plan for achieving high student outcomes,” said State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver. “She sees possibilities rather than obstacles, and her positive energy underscores the bright hope we see when we look into the eyes of these students and teachers.” Cave recently served as Colleton County School District superintendent from July 2021 through June 2023. Prior to her arrival in Colleton County, she was Associate Superintendent for K-12 School Transformation and Innovation at Savannah Chatham County Public Schools in Savannah, Georgia. “I am excited for the possibility to return home and lead the school district that molded me into the leader I have become today,” Cave said. “I am confident that, with my skill set, I will bring a wealth of energy, vitality, and tenacity that is needed. I look forward to meeting with the community to share about my vision for the future.” A native of Allendale County, Cave began her educational journey in her hometown as a firstgrade teacher in Allendale Primary School. She then taught for several years in Beaufort County before serving in various administrative roles with the district. Cave also served four years as a principal in Georgia. Cave holds several degrees, including a Masters in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from the University of South Carolina, and a doctorate in leadership from Walden University. Cave is an avid church musician and loves spending time with her mother, two children and six grandchildren. ###
Convocation is a chance to motivate and prepare staff for the upcoming school year. As we continue to race forward to success, don't forget to embody the message Mrs. Jacobs gave during her State of the District Address. We are all stewards, and as employees of the Allendale County School District, it is our mission to serve our scholars and their families.
